Benefits of Walking

Research has shown that walking is one of the best forms of exercise we can do. While walking, our body enjoys the increased flow of energy from the movement of muscles and introduction of oxygen to every cell. Walking is also a weight-bearing exercise that helps strengthen bones and improves posture. With minimal requirements, walking is simple and free. You don’t need to be fit or an athlete to gain from this exercise.
Here are some of the wonderful benefits of walking:
  • Improves general health
  • Improves strength of both heart and lungs
  • Helps prevent osteoporosis
  • Improves efficiency of the body’s immune system
  • Improves overall emotional condition
  • Increases energy
  • Reduces stress
  • Delays some effects of the aging process
  • Helps maintain muscle tone and balance
  • Assists in the control of diabetes
Not only are there great benefits to physical walking but also spiritual walking has lasting benefits. God has a desire to walk with His perfect creation. This is shown to us in Genesis 3:8 (NKJV): “And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.”
Prior to the fall of man, God walked and talked face to face with Adam and Eve because He loved and enjoyed the fellowship with them. However, because of sin, man was separated from God. When we make Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, we too can walk with God. In John 8:12 (NIV), Jesus tells us, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
So as you strive toward becoming healthier this year, may our Father in Heaven continue to guide and direct your path. Never forget that God loves you and that your life has a purpose. Physically walking 30-45 minutes each day will improve your health and increase your lifespan; however, walking with God provides benefits that will last for eternity.
